Correspondent Attorneys

Your matter in Potchefstroom, handled as you would handle it. Appearances, service and filing, sheriff liaison and urgent attendances - on the customary tariff, with feedback the same day.

For fellow attorneys

The rules of court require a physical address for service situated either within the court's jurisdiction or within 25 kilometres of the courthouse. Our office at 74 Smit Street qualifies on both counts, and the Magistrate's and Regional Courts where we appear daily in our own practice are on our doorstep - which is precisely what a correspondent is for.

Four things, done properly: appearances on your brief, service and filing with the returns back to you as they issue, sheriff liaison with the follow-through that stalls matters run from a distance, and urgent attendances when something here cannot wait. Acceptance, conflicts and the tariff are confirmed before any attendance - and the report reaches you the same day.

How it runs

01

Instruct

Email the brief - memo, process, date if set. Phone first for anything urgent.

02

Confirm

Acceptance, conflicts checked and the tariff agreed - before the attendance, not after.

03

Attend

Court, service, filing or sheriff - done as you would do it yourself.

04

Report

Same-day feedback in writing: what happened, what was ordered, what comes next.

Yours.
The correspondent ethic
  • We deal with you, not your client
  • Our name where convention puts it
  • Everything returns to you
  • Briefed twice is the aim
Between colleagues

Your client stays yours.

Entirely, permanently, without a footnote. We correspond with you, not with your client, unless you direct otherwise - and when the matter ends, everything returns to you.

The correspondent relationship runs on that understanding, and we have never given a colleague reason to doubt it.

Common questions

General information, not legal advice - each matter turns on its own facts. Disclaimer

What do you attend to as correspondent?
Four things, done properly. Appearances at the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court and Regional Court - motions, postponements, defaults, and appearances on your brief. Service and filing at the courts here, with the stamped copies and returns back to you as they issue. Sheriff liaison - instructions delivered, returns chased, the practical follow-through that stalls matters run from a distance. And urgent attendances, when something in Potchefstroom cannot wait for the post.
Which courts do you cover?
The Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court and the Regional Court sitting here - the courts on our doorstep, where we appear daily in our own practice. If your instruction concerns another court or office in the district, ask before you brief us and we will tell you plainly whether we can attend to it properly.

And the practical point that brings colleagues to this page in the first place: the rules of court require a physical address for service situated either within the court's jurisdiction or within 25 kilometres of the courthouse. Our office at 74 Smit Street qualifies on both counts - your address for service, your appearances and your sheriff instructions, all handled from one street in Potchefstroom.
On what basis do you charge?
The customary agreed correspondent tariff - confirmed with you on acceptance of the instruction, before any attendance. No surprises between colleagues: you know our fee before we appear, and our account reaches you with the report, itemised.
How quickly do you report?
Same-day feedback after every appearance - what happened, what was ordered, what comes next, in writing before close of business. Service and filing are confirmed as they occur, and returns and stamped copies follow as they issue. A correspondent who reports late is a correspondent you brief once; we intend to be briefed twice.
How do we instruct you?
Email the brief to wjlaw111@gmail.com - your memo of instruction, the pleadings or process concerned, and the date if one is set - and phone 087 133 3595 for anything urgent or short-notice. We confirm acceptance, conflicts checked, and the tariff, before the attendance. If we cannot attend properly on the timeline you need, we say so at once rather than discover it for you at court.
Whose client is it?
Yours. Entirely, permanently, without a footnote. We correspond with you, not with your client, unless you direct otherwise; our name appears where correspondent convention puts it and nowhere else; and when the matter ends, everything returns to you. The correspondent relationship runs on that understanding, and we have never given a colleague reason to doubt it.
Can you take an urgent attendance?
Phone first - 087 133 3595. If it can properly be done on your timeline, we will say yes on the call and the brief can follow; if it cannot, you will know within minutes, while there is still time to make another plan. That is worth more than an optimistic yes.

Brief us once; judge us by the report.
